New study: Lustration Index, 2012: Measuring Post-Communist Transitional Justice
April 21, 2017
A new study, entitled Lustration Index: Measuring Post-Communist Transition Justice is published. This study is introducing the first comprehensive index of lustration. It constructs a multidimensional concept of lustration and introduces a nuanced approach to measure the most common post-communist mechanism of transitional justice over the two decades after the fall of Communism. It remedies the shortcomings of previous indices by developing a generalizable measure of lustration that can distinguish among types and intensity of lustration and that takes seriously the cases of non-lustration in order to provide verified scientific explanations. The index is based on original empirical data, elite interviews, digitalized communist archives and content analysis of legal texts across thirty-four countries of the post-communist world from 1989 to 2012.
