UK Data Service announces £15,000 #EULife Open Data AppChallenge

22. 07. 2015

The UK Data Service and AppChallenge.net announce the launch of a developer contest using open data about the Quality of Life of European citizens. With a prize fund of £15,000 the #EULife AppChallenge will crowdsource exciting new apps and ways of using the data provided from the Eurofound European Quality of Life Survey.

“Europe; our security, work-life balance, health and the impact of political decisions like austerity are hot topics across the continent” said Ralph Cochrane, CEO of AppChallenge.net. “Now, for the first time we’re able to compare how we feel to our fellow citizens in other countries. We’re excited to see in what creative ways developers will use this open data to help us all understand the Europe we live in, a little better.”

Carried out every four years, this unique, pan-European survey examines both the objective circumstances of European citizens' lives and how they feel about those circumstances and their lives in general. It looks at a range of issues, such as employment, income, education, housing, family, health and work-life balance. It also looks at subjective topics, such as people's levels of happiness, how satisfied they are with their lives, and how they perceive the quality of their societies.

The Economic & Social Research Council funded this open data innovation project overseen by the UK Data Service. The contest closes on the 30th September and the winners will be announced by the end of October 2015.

The contest can be found at http://eulife.appchallenge.net and is open to developers worldwide over the age of 16 years. There is a special prize for young people, aged 16-24 years old and a total prize fund of £15,000.
