European Social Survey invites EU data users to visit and learn

07. 05. 2013

Users of cross-national survey data are invited to visit one of seven Survey Competence Centres based around Europe.

Attendees will learn more about areas of specialist interest – everything from social survey methodologies and research methods to data curation, archiving and dissemination.

The invitation comes from the central coordinating team of the European Social Survey (ESS), a biennial cross-sectional survey that covers more than 30 nations. The survey was established in 2001 to chart and explain the interaction between Europe’s changing institutions and and the attitudes, beliefs and behaviour patterns of its diverse populations. The project is directed by the Centre for Comparative Social Surveys at City University London and carried out in partnership with six other institutions across Europe. All have Survey Competence Centres, each with its own areas of expertise:

Norwegian Social Science Data Services
GESIS, Germany
The Netherlands Institute for Social Research, Netherlands
Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Spain
University of Leuven, Belgium
University of Ljubljana, Slovenia

Apply to visit

Visits to one of the Survey Competence Centres are open to social scientists or PhD students who are resident in one of the ESS participating countries and have practical experience with ESS data. Visits usually take one to four days, allowing time for visitors to engage directly with scientific and research staff.

Details on the seven ESS Survey Competence Centres and their specific areas of expertise are available on the ESS website, along with an online application form.
