Depth interviewing skills

This two-day course gives participants an understanding of, and experience in using, the skills and techniques involved in conducting qualitative interviews to a high standard. It will be delivered via a combination of taught and practical sessions.

Course content covers:
* the depth interview in social research;
* in-depth interviewing skills: active listening, open questioning and probing techniques;
* topic guide design;
* using a topic guide;
* interviewer attributes;
* managing the interview process I – stages of the interview;
* managing the interview process II – working with specific populations, dealing with sensitive or difficult topics and situations;
* practical interviewing issues.

The course will be delivered through a mixture of taught sessions and practical exercises by members of NatCen’s Qualitative Research Unit (QRU). The trainers all have extensive experience of conducting in-depth interviews for qualitative studies.

Participants will each receive a course resource folder and a complimentary copy of Qualitative Research Practice, edited by Jane Ritchie and Jane Lewis (Sage, 2003), which was written by current and former researchers from the QRU.
