Rapid social and economic changes have a strong impact on the accelerating dynamics of spatial development. On the one hand, we are facing increasing demands from investors for new areas for the development of activities, on the other hand, with increasing the dynamics of abandonment of already established activities, which leads to various types of degradation, and most often to the physical degradation of space. This research presents the characteristics of functionally degraded areas in Slovenia, their number and the size (in ha), criteria for their definition, typology and arguments for further monitoring and regular updating of the new spatial and data layer. Functional degraded area (FDA) is defined as an underused or abandoned area with a visible impact of previous use and reduced use value. In Slovenia, as part of a comprehensive approach to the treatment of FDAs, in 2017 a system for recording and monitoring FDAs was designed and established for the first time, based on the process of identifying and recording FDAs. All togeather 1081 of FDAs were identified. The 2020 survey represents its continuation, as with the first update of the national FDA database, the authors re-checked and re-examined the situation on the FDAs registered in 2017, and also included newly identified areas in the database. In September 2020, they recorded a total of 1,167 FDAs with a total area of 3,747 ha. Researchers supplemented the data by continuously monitoring the processes in space, involving representatives of all 212 Slovenian municipalities and field visits. They recorded major changes (311 FDAs), added newly identified areas (193 FDAs) and excluded from the database those on which activity resumed (107 FDAs). FDO data are also available in the web application: http://crp.gis.si/.
